In Aotearoa, we’re fortunate to live in a land rich with diverse cultures, histories, and traditions. From the sacred stories of the Māori to the vibrant expressions of our Pacific neighbours and the many other cultures that call New Zealand home, our nation is a beautiful amalgamation of identities coming together.
When we open our hearts and minds to the traditions, languages, and perspectives of others, we embark on a journey of discovery. Understanding and embracing these cultures isn’t just an exercise in respect; it’s a journey that enriches our lives and deepens our connections with others.
As the Māori proverb reminds us, “He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.” (What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.)
At AKA, this proverb is at the heart of everything we do. From our conception, our mission has been to help our students grow and flourish. Just as the vine, ‘aka’ in te reo, needs support to grow towards the sun, we aim to nurture and support our students as they reach for their educational and life goals.
Now, we’re excited to introduce our latest initiative: Sow, Nurture, Grow. Designed to nurture our own unique AKA tikanga (culture, our agreed set of customs, meanings, and ways of acting). It’s our way of celebrating the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the diverse cultures that make our community so vibrant. As part of this initiative, we invite you to join us in learning our karakia (non-denominational prayers used to invoke guidance and protection), waiata (songs), and your own pepeha (introduction or story of the places and people you are connected to).
These practices are not only a gateway to understanding Māori culture but also a way to connect with your classmates and feel more at home in Aotearoa. Resources to support your learning are available, here - www.aka.ac.nz/sow-nurture-grow
We look forward to these tunes and vibes filling up our corridors! #UpTeAKA
