Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is almost here, offering an opportunity to dive into te reo Māori, the language of Aotearoa’s tangata whenua (people of the land). Whether you're a local or an international student, this week is all about celebrating, learning, and connecting with the rich cultural heart of Aotearoa.
Why Celebrate Māori Language Week?
Māori Language Week is more than just an event—it's a movement. Since its inception in 1975, this week has been dedicated to revitalising te reo Māori, ensuring it thrives for generations to come.
For many New Zealanders, te reo Māori is a taonga (treasure) that embodies their identity, history, and worldview. By celebrating Māori Language Week, we acknowledge the significance of te reo in our lives and show our commitment to celebrating a vital part of our nation’s heritage.
What’s in It for You?
Whether you're a fluent speaker or just starting out, Māori Language Week is a chance to expand your kete aronui (basket of knowledge). You can:
Learn new phrases: Incorporate Māori greetings, phrases, and proverbs (whakataukī) into your daily conversations.
Participate in events: As well as AKA’s Whānau Day, you can also join local activities such as language workshops, cultural performances, and communal meals.
Connect with the community: Engaging in these celebrations fosters a sense of unity and helps build stronger connections with the people around you.
A special note for international students
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is an great way to deepen your understanding of New Zealand's rich cultural history. By participating, you’ll gain insights into the Māori worldview, which emphasises values like whanaungatanga (relationships), manaakitanga (hospitality), and kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the environment).
Learning a few words or phrases in te reo Māori not only enhances your experience here but also shows respect for the local culture. It’s a small step that can make a big difference in how you connect with your classmates, neighbours, and even your future co-workers in Aotearoa New Zealand.
